Look up at this beautiful cathedral. Holy Name Cathedral, built in 1875, rebuilt after a fire in 1914. Gorgeous, right? Very holy. Very sacred.
It's also where a man was shot in the head right out front.
On November 10th, 1924, Dean O'Banion—the leader of the North Side Gang before Bugs Moran—was murdered inside his flower shop, which was directly across the street from this cathedral.
Three years later, in 1926, a guy named Hymie Weiss was walking toward the cathedral when gunmen in a second-floor window across the street opened fire. Weiss was hit ten times. He died on the sidewalk.
If you look at the cornerstone of the cathedral—the big block at the corner of the building—you can still see the bullet holes. The church never repaired them. They've been there for almost a hundred years.
Walk to the corner. Look at the cornerstone. Touch the bullet holes if you want. You're touching 1926.
