Augustus Saint-Gaudens created this in 1887 using a life mask of Lincoln's actual face and hands from 1860. Most Lincoln statues show him looking heroic. This one shows him exhausted — standing in front of a chair, staring at the ground, clothes rumpled. He looks like a man who hasn't slept in four years. Which, historically, tracks.
The statue was funded by lumber merchant Eli Bates, who left $40,000 in his will. Ten thousand people attended the unveiling, including Lincoln's grandson. Replicas stand in London's Parliament Square and Mexico City.
